What I am currently reading:
In this thriller set in a rural Gulf Coast town, twelve-year-old Marty Jameson finds refuge in the attic from his mother’s abusive rages. But only during the day. At night the attic holds terrors even beyond what he witnesses in his home. With a family made up of a psychotic mother, a drug-dealing father and a comatose older brother withering away in the spare bedroom, Marty feels trapped.
Next door, wheel-chair bound Sadie Marsh obsessively watches Marty’s comings and goings from her bedroom window, despite her mother’s warning about the evil in that house. Evil which appears to Sadie as huge black-winged creatures.
Marty, emotionally torn by the violence and dysfunction in his family, is drawn to Sadie and her kindly mother. But if he is to save his new friend from the supernatural horror threatening them all, Marty must transform himself from victim to hero. And to do so, he must first confront what lurks hidden in the shadows of his attic.
What I recently finished reading:
Retired, divorced and addicted to eggplant, Taylor Blake is seeing things. That aren’t there. Determined to forestall the inevitable trip to a locked facility, she skillfully hides the fact that her life has become a horror movie. Then, at a club dance, an octogenarian stalker in a Tom Mix costume invites her to The Paper Doll Museum.
There Taylor’s fears are banished in a reality beyond imagining. She isn’t crazy; she’s a Revenant, one of the few who have regained the magical perceptions of childhood. But the magic is accompanied by childhood’s dark side as well. There really is something hiding in the dark. There always was. Fortunately, Taylor Blake can kick ass.
What I plan on reading the last half of the week and the weekend:

In this world, science took the place of magic. Meanwhile, the transition from the era of steam to the epoch of Sublime Electricity is already underway. But magic hasn’t simply disappeared without a trace. It still exists, concealed in the blood of the illustrious.
Detective constable Leopold Orso of the metropolitan police counts himself among their number. He was bestowed a talent that allows him to bring others’ fears to life.
Leopold didn’t go looking for trouble. All he really wanted was to gain access to his rightful inheritance. But, his peaceful life came to an end when a box from his grandmother’s estate caught the interest of a mysterious cabal of conspirators, police and bloodthirsty malefics.
