Goodreads synopsis:

Geeks rule in this delightfully dangerous dragon adventure.

The badass dragon shifters of the Iron Claws motorcycle club will risk everything for the people they love. Cast out from their dragon clans, they must use their cunning and strength to defy the laws of their people and stay one step ahead of those determined to keep life-saving cures out of the hands of humans.

Brilliant, transgender shifter Alec Harper is trying to atone for his dark past by dedicating his life to healing humans. When it appears his life-saving drug may actually be a life-taking drug, Alec must race to discover the truth before more innocents die.

Vampire scientist Penelope O’Hara has been fascinated by all things supernatural for three hundred years. When Alec saves her from a sudden attack by dragon shifter goons, Penelope is pulled into a dangerous world of hackers, killers, and conspiracies. Logic tells her that the perils of being with someone from the Iron Claws are a bad idea, but her heart keeps telling her to stay.

This adult novella includes daring rescues, sexy science, and a nerdy romance that defies expectations.

My review:

Way back in book 1, Dylan and Marie’s story, it was revealed that Alec was transgendered and it intrigued me. See, I don’t think I have read a romance that had a transgendered man (or woman) as one of the main characters. I was very curious to see how the author would be writing the romance.  I wasn’t disappointed. Not only did the author did a great job writing the romance but Alec’s background as well.

I just wanted to hug Alec. The poor guy had been through the wringer and back before he joined the Iron Claws. I just wanted to cry when he thought he wouldn’t find his mate because of how he looked (male on the inside (dragon was male too), female on the outside). He was too male for some girls, too female for others and he just gave up looking for love. While he was happy for his friends, he was sad at the same time. He wanted what they had.

Penelope was a brilliant vampire scientist who was researching magic. She has a tragic past too but nothing like Alec’s. The reason she started studying magic was that when her brother was dying, she attempted a spell to cure him and it didn’t work. So she wanted to know why it worked for witches and not for her and that is what fueled her 300 year-long research.

The Iron Claws find out that Puff has been killing people and it throws everyone into an uproar and a tizzy. They know it is not true but they need to find a way to prove it. Alec decides to go for a walk and happens to run into Penelope, as she is getting a beat down on a sidewalk just down the street from AUDREY’s. Who was she getting a beat down from? Hired muscle from the Dragon High Council for reasons that are revealed later in the book. Being out in the daylight has drained her so when Alec offers his wrist to her to drink from, she takes it and feels overwhelmingly attracted to him.

The romance between Penelope and Alec did get off to a rocky start. See, Penelope couldn’t wrap her head around that while Alec had male blood, he still had the body of a woman. Alec was sure that while Penelope was attracted to him, she wouldn’t get past that Alec was still a woman in body (not in heart or soul, though). Obviously, they get together but it was interesting to see Penelope’s thought progress and then her “who cares” attitude when she gave in.

The sex scenes between Alec and Penelope were hot but sweet. I literally laughed out loud when Penelope unloaded a bunch of sex toys from her magic bag….including the Hulk. I was dying when she described it. I actually laughed so hard that BK wanted to know what I was laughing at. When I told him, he just looked at me and went “ooookkkaaayyy”.

The Dragon High Council really were in rare from this book. From framing the Iron Claws to beating Penelope down and bombing her lab, they were really bad guys. But the bad can fall and I really can’t wait to read the last book!!

The ending was great. Alec and Penelope’s story ended and the Puff killing people storyline was ended (thanks to Alec and Penelope) but the Dragon High Council storyline is still there. I cannot wait to see how this series ends!!

How many stars will I give Her Hacker Dragon: 5

Why: While the sex was great, it was the transgender storyline that made this book.

Goodreads synopsis:

This Rock Star shifter lives for his music and fights for his love.

The badass dragon shifters of the Iron Claws motorcycle club will risk everything for the people they love. Cast out from their dragon clans, they must use their cunning and strength to defy the laws of their people and stay one step ahead of those determined to keep life-saving cures out of the hands of humans.

Punk rocker Caesar de la Vega is a dragon shifter on the cusp of his big break. While performing a gig, he unexpectedly spots Nina, a one-night-stand from five years ago he can’t forget. But everything changes when a record label offers him fame, fortune, and a world tour which would send him far away. With his motorcycle club in constant peril from the Dragon High Council, Caesar must choose between stardom and those he loves.

Nina Alvarez is a successful freelance programmer who loves the freedom of her nomadic life. When Nina notices her old flame is back in town, she can’t resist checking out the sexy rock star from her past. When he shows he still cares about her after so many years apart, Nina believes they may have something special. But with danger closing in on the Iron Claws, can Nina still be a part of Caesar’s world?

This steamy novella for adults features power ballads, slippery assassins, and a romance that rocks.

My review:

When I saw that this novella was going to feature Caesar and I got really excited. Caesar really wasn’t talked about in the previous 2 books and that built an air of mystery around him. All I really got from the other two books was that he was a musician on the brink of stardom and that he used CD’s to sell Puff. Oh, and let’s not forget that he was deliciously hot. So I figured that this book would be mainly music-themed and I was right.

Like I said about, Caesar was hot and he was pining after the one who got away. The girl who taught him how to knit. He even wrote a song about her, “Knitting Girl”. So when Nina shows up at one of his shows, he decides to take his chance and run with it.

I thought Nina was so adorable. She truly loved Caesar but figured their time together (told in flashback) was just a fling. Another notch on Caesar’s belt, so to speak. She went on with her life but couldn’t contain herself when she saw he was back in town. She had to go and see him. I really liked when she met the Iron Claws. She fit right in with them.

The Dragon High Council was still skulking around, trying to take down the Iron Claws. I will say that their newest scheme was pretty ingenious and all I have to say is thank god Alec had such mad hacking skills and figured everything out.

I did like the tie into Alpha’s MatesI was a little surprised at who Titus was to Caesar. Not a little surprised, a lot surprised (want to find out….read the book).

Nina and Caesar’s sex scenes were hot, hot, hot. But what I liked about these scenes was that they were truly in love (not that the other’s weren’t) and they waited 5 years to declare their love to each other.

Nina and Caesar’s storyline was resolved in this book but the storyline about Puff and The Dragon High Council was not. I can’t wait to see what will happen in the next book.

How many stars will I give Her Rock Star Dragon: 4

Why: Great read with memorable characters and out of this world sex scenes.

Goodreads synopsis:

Dangerously tasty

Ned is tired of being underestimated. He’s a motorcycle-riding dragon shifter who kicks ass and bakes a mean cheesecake. When a mission for his biker club, the Iron Claws, leads Ned to the famously promiscuous tiger shifter clan, he finds much more than he bargained for.

Maya’s a cunning tiger shifter and her clan’s head of security. She has always defied her clan’s sex-obsessed ways, but meeting handsome, sensitive Ned makes her question her cynical views. When Ned’s club is attacked, Maya and Ned are thrown into a battle with deadly stakes. Will Maya be willing to lose all she has to save Ned?

This novella for adults includes daring rescues, drool-worthy desserts, and a love that can’t be whisked away.

My review:

I will admit that I had a “moment” when reading Her Delicious Dragon. As I started reading, I was thinking to myself “Ned seems awfully familiar” but I couldn’t place him. It was when he was telling Maya about his past that the darn light bulb went “Ding”. Ned was the bellhop in Alpha’s Domain and Alpha’s Christmas Flame. The bellhop that I thought, for some reason, was a teenager. Don’t ask me why I thought that. I just assumed it (remember that old saying about assuming…..yeah).

Ned was a sweetheart in this book. I mean, what guy would not make a move on a girl in the middle of an orgy. Ned!!! He was also somewhat of a pacifist (I say somewhat because he did see action in the first book) and he could cook. My mouth was watering at the descriptions of what he baked and I thought to myself “I wish he was real. I would kidnap him and keep him in my kitchen”. Then thought “Yeah, BK would LOVE that”….lmao.

Maya was not your typical tiger shifter. Tiger shifters banged anything with two legs (or more) and did not believe in monogamy but Maya, well she was different. I did like her but she came off as prickly at the beginning of the book. Real prickly but it was explained why she was the way she was and it made sense.

The sex, as always, was insanely hot. I really enjoyed the talons and claws that were used to shred clothing. Not torn off but shredded. Always a sign of great sex….lol.

The Puff storyline was in full force and of course, the Dragon High Council made a big appearance towards the end. Which made me think….what else could they have up their sleeves?

How many stars will I give Her Delicious Dragon: 4

Why: A great book with hot sex scenes and a fantastic storyline.

Goodreads synopsis:

Sexy dragon shifter Dylan Masters seeks redemption for his past by hunting for the Iron Claws, a motorcycle club of exiled dragons with an illicit agenda. When Dylan finally joins them, he is thrown into a new world of shady dealings and powerful enemies. Even in the midst of chaos, everything changes when he lays eyes on the Iron Claws’s brilliant Latina nurse, Marie.

Curvaceous Marie rides alongside the Iron Claws as their human medic, journeying from town to town dispensing magical remedies to those in desperate need. Experience has taught her to shield her heart, but when the dashing Dylan joins the club, she may have finally found a reason to let her guard down. But will her dangerous past cut her happiness short once more?

This adult novella includes naughty nurses, dramatic dragon brawls, and a passionate love that heals all wounds.

My review:

I know I have said this in past reviews, but A.J. Tipton is fast becoming one of my favorite paranormal/fantasy/romance/erotica writers. I was super excited to read the Her Biker Dragon series and I wasn’t let down. This series was fantastic and the books had me hooked. I think I devoured the series in 2 days.

Dylan was a hottie with a sad history. I can see why he wanted to join the Iron Claws and distribute Puff (by the way, love the play on wordage there….I was singing “Puff the Magic Dragon” in my head the entire series). He was an investigator and wanted to bring his skills to the club. His reaction, and his dragon’s, to Marie was great and I really like that he didn’t beat around the bush to get what he wanted.

Marie had an equally sad back story. She found out about Puff when Big Joe gave her some while she was dying of cancer in a hospital and she decided to join their cause. But there was also a far more sinister reason she was more than willing to go on the run with the Iron Claws as their medic (read the book!!).

The sex scenes between Dylan and Marie were hot, hot, hot. I was also pretty excited that I finally got a peek into the back room at AUDREY’s. I was a little let down, though. I thought it was going to be more interesting instead of being your standard backroom…lol. But still, the sex went there….haha.

The storylines were pretty simple. The Puff one wasn’t resolved by any means (even though there was a pretty awesome fight scene) but Marie’s was.

How many stars will I give Her Valiant Dragon: 4

Why: I enjoyed reading this short story. The storylines were great, the sex scenes were hot and I loved the dragon MC!!

The Watcher – Book 2

Where you can find this book: Amazon

Goodreads synopsis:

Hell-bent on avenging his own death, former Keeper Dev Geary eagerly accepts when the Watchers task him with returning to the human realm to discover the secret for rendering Similitude—the very thing that killed him.

But to succeed in the seven days he’s been granted, he’ll need to work with the one human who wants nothing to do with him, and who he can’t help falling for—Meda Gabriel, a cagey, street-smart bar owner with a unique skill set, and maybe, the key to his mission.

With the clock ticking and the Betrayers barely a step behind, can Dev conquer his demons and find the answers the clan so desperately needs, with Meda at his side? Can love find a way, or will he be forced to abandon her and the clan, leaving them all to face imminent destruction?

My review:

The Watcher is the 2nd book in the Crossing Realms series. Told in 3rd person, this is Dev Greary’s story and oh boy was it a good one. Brought back from death, Dev has 7 days to convince Meda Gabriel, a woman with the power to read minds, to help Dev in his mission. He has to outwit Abel, Haenous’s son and now the leader of the Betrayers while trying to figure out how to keep them from making more Similitude and keeping the Betrayers from destroying not only Earth but the realm that the Watchers are from.

I will be honest, Dev annoyed me. He had such a huge chip on his shoulder about repaying a debt to Nick. He took unnecessary risks and one day it caught up to him and he was killed. Even as a Watcher in Training, he took those same type of risks. Like the beginning scene where he was climbing the mountain and was standing over the edge of the ravine while it was crumbling. But, the more I got to know him, the more it made sense he was taking these risks. I also could see why The Watchers chose him to carry out the mission.

Meda was a little harder to get a handle on in the beginning but as the author started to reveal what made her tick, I could see why she shut herself off from people. When she talked about how she got the scar on her face, I wanted to bawl (ok, I might have cried a bit). I liked that she took no crap from Dev. I really think that he needed someone in his life-like that before he died. Just saying. What I also really liked is that the author chose to include Native American mythology when they were making Flint. I thought that little myth was very interesting and it totally went with the story (click here for the legend of Flint).

The romance between Meda and Dev wasn’t a slow burn. It couldn’t be, seeing that he had only 7 days to do what he had to do. It was explosive and I loved it. Sometimes life doesn’t have time for a slow burn romance. The sex scenes between Meda and Dev were intense and off the page sizzling.

Now, I am going to do something I barely do but I have to talk about Abel, the Broodmaster of the Betrayers.

All I have to say is wow. Have to be Amazon PC, he is not a very nice guy and was determined to follow in Haenous’s footsteps. I did feel for him though, because it seemed like his father abused him (big flag to me was when he was starved by his father energy-wise) and he was always picked on by the other children because he always wore sweaters, even in the summer, because he was always cold. He felt that he couldn’t love Magpie (even though she was completely head over heels in love with him) and he wanted to destroy his niece, Jordan, who he considered a half-breed.

But any feelings of being sad for him were wiped in the last couple of chapters of the book. All I have to say is that I hope he gets what is coming for him. And poor Magpie. I wanted to cry for her. She didn’t seem inherently bad…..just following orders from her Master. I also felt awful for Jordan.

While Dev and Meda’s storyline was kinda wrapped up (I have a feeling that something that Meda said couldn’t happen has happened), the main storyline wasn’t and it looks like it is just revving up.

How many stars will I give The Watcher: 4

Why: This was an action-packed romance right from the get-go. The characters were a bit prickly to read and I honestly thought Dev was annoying in the beginning, but they grew on me and I grew to love them. The storyline was fantastic and I can’t wait for Book 3 (Curtis and Jordan’s story???) to come out.

Goodreads synopsis:

Maddie Milner is mad.

She’s mad about being left behind in the town of Topside and mad about not being mad enough to go that…that…place.

But most of all, Maddie’s mad to get her husband back – the Hatter – whose been stuck at a never-ending tea-party somewhere in the depths of Wonderland.

With time finally, on her side, Maddie is determined to find a way into that…that…place – to save her husband, and make them all pay…especially, the Queen of Hearts.

Maddie was left behind.

She hasn’t forgotten.

Now she wants revenge.

My review:

I absolutely loved The Hatter’s Wife. Written in 1st person, you are taken through Wonderland while Mad Maddie Milner searches for her husband, Tippery Milner….aka The Mad Hatter.

As a fan of Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass (I have read both), I appreciate how closely the author followed those stories but at the same time put her own spin on them. I liked that the Mad Hatter had a wife who missed him and was willing to do anything to get him back.

Maddie Milner was hilarious. She was very focused on getting her husband back from Wonderland and had to do some insane things to even get into Wonderland from Topside. To get there involved a yew tree, a pocket watch and a piece of chalk.

What I liked the most about Maddie is that she was unabashedly snarky and she admits, right in the beginning, that the story she is telling is being told to someone in her head. As with most Wonderland/Topside residents, she isn’t really all there….lol.

Her adventure, once she gets to Wonderland, was truly that, an adventure and of course, here I am laughing during it all. I will say this, the Queen of Hearts did get what was coming to her. I never liked her, even when I read the original books.

The end of the book was very interesting and I believe it couldn’t have been more perfect for this story. I do hope that the author takes another trip into Topside/Wonderland again!!

How many stars will I give The Hatter’s Wife: 5

Why: I loved reading this short story about Wonderland. The author did a great job of creating new characters that were based on the original characters in Alice in Wonderland/Through the Looking Glass. The snarkiness of this book was fantastic too, as well as the play of words. Like I said above, I had to reread chapters because of the wordage and laughed while I was doing it.

Will I reread: Yes

Will I recommend to family and friends: Yes

Age range: Older teen (16+)

Why: No sex or language. But there is violence.

The Sky Cult – Book 2

Can be read out-of-order from series: No

Where you can find this book: Amazon

Goodreads synopsis:

After the events of the first book, Freya has joined the Institute – an organization created to help Espers control their powers, and she thought she’d finally found peace.

That is until Anti-Esper weapons find their way into the hands of The Coalition, a radical group who is determined to kill anyone with powers.
At the same time, the Sky Cult has arisen, claiming that Espers have the right to rule over lowly humans.
The timing couldn’t be worse, as all of this happens three days before Esper Day, the first holiday designed to show that humans and Espers can coexist.

Now Nathan, Freya and the team have to fight both organizations in a race against time before one of the radical groups tips the scales and plunge the entire world into their own version of Armageddon.

My review:

The Sky Cult was a fast-paced, excellent second book to the Esper Files. Picking up shortly after The Esper Files ended, the book starts off with a bang and there are two new villains introduced. Jupiter, who can control thunder and lightning, and Lichtmann who can burn people with his touch and exudes a golden light (he also thinks he’s an angel). Jupiter is the leader of the Sky Cult and he believes that the Espers should rule over the non Espers. Lichtmann’s agenda is to protect Jupiter……as long as Jupiter is in the good graces of the mysterious Hades.

Freya is still my favorite character in this series. She is a typical teenager, except she can wield ice like Elsa in Frozen (sorry, I had to put it in there). And her mouth, oh boy, I was laughing in some parts. But, she was also someone you didn’t want to mess with. When the Institute gets attacked by the Anti-Esper Coalition, she was there defending it from the Coalition with her ice powers.

Nathan was still as suave as he was in the first book. He was also still absorbing other Esper’s powers. That is something he does by touch. I will say that he did get plenty of action in this book. The poor guy was injured more often than naught….well until he absorbed Red Cap’s powers.

The main storyline of the book was great. I loved that there was so much action and the steampunk elements (Hello….airships, RAILGUNS!!!!!!) were absolutely great. If it seems like I am going on a little overboard with the praise it’s because I can count on one hand how many good steampunk books I have read and truly enjoyed. This series is one of them.

The secondary characters of this book made it. I cannot wait to see if the Phantom Thief, Red Cap (who cracked me up while reading because while he was so evil, his one-liners that had me rolling) and more of the Espers from the Institute will be featured.

I loved the climax of the book. I was not expecting what happened to happen. It threw me for a loop. I also liked the explanation about why Nathan couldn’t absorb Jupiter’s powers. It made so much sense. Well, at least it made sense to me.

While the Coalition storyline was somewhat wrapped up and the storyline about the weapons that can cripple the Espers was definitely wrapped up (want to know what that is?? Read that book), another storyline opened up. I am very curious about what is going to happen with it and if we will ever find out who the mysterious Hades is. I also want to know how Nathan fits into this whole insane thing.

The end of the book was different and it raised more questions than it answered. Which is makes me want to read the next book.

How many stars will I give The Sky Cult: 4

Why: A strong second book that I couldn’t put down. It was full of action and humor, as well as mystery, and I loved it. Plus, it was steampunk and I love, love, love steampunk!!

Will I reread: Yes

Will I recommend to family and friends: Yes

Why: Mild violence

Goodreads synopsis:

Katie knows better than to believe in happy endings.

She learned there was no such thing after her mother died. In the postindustrial town of Riverside, Katie struggles to care for her distant father and his failing hotel. Her only comfort lies in the arms of her true love, Shay.

Yet one evening, he disappears without a trace.

Devastated, Katie jumps off a bridge in the dead of winter, expecting to meet death at the bottom. Instead, her fall transports her to a snowy netherworld, where trapped souls take on the form of animals and the only thing that matters is survival.

When Katie discovers that Shay has been kidnapped by a deadly witch called the Winter Queen, she goes on a journey to find him, traveling through the realms of storybook fairies, princesses, thieves, and monsters to bring him home. But the path is harsh and dangerous. Will Shay and Katie be reunited? Or be forever trapped within an eternal winter?

A retelling of the classic fairytale The Snow Queen, WINTER FALLS is a young adult epic fantasy romance which examines the trials of depression and mental illness in a magical world of action and adventure.

Teen fans of C.S. Lewis and Shannon Hale will love this inspirational novel by author Jacque Stevens

My review:

What a great retelling and imaginative retelling of the Snow Queen.

Told in 1st person and through flashbacks, after Katie jumps off of the same bridge that her mother, Winter Falls explores depression, suicide and how it affects the people left behind. The way the author wrote about it and the sensitivity that she showed about such sensitive subjects was amazing. I also like that she didn’t glamorize suicide, as I have seen in some books. Beth’s reasons for committing suicide were awful and I cried when the reason was revealed.

I liked how Katie’s character wasn’t perfect by any means. She is a snob, keeps herself away from her family and openly mocks her stepmother as she tells fairy tales to Katie’s younger brother and sisters. You are hard-pressed to like her in her flashbacks because of how she is.

But, everything does change when she enters the land of fairy and starts on her quest to get Spring, Summer and Autumn’s tokens of powers. You could just see her come into her own and you could see her processing how closed off she was, how rude and how snobby she was as she is retelling her life story and how she fell in love with Shay.

Shay’s character was as flawed but he was aware of it and he did try to better himself. I felt awful when he was talking to Katie about how bad his home life was after his mother died and when Katie’s stepmother basically told his father to get lost.

Katie’s quest was different and full of surprises. The people/animals that she met and helped/were helped by stood out to me. Each season was basically her finding herself and her understanding that she didn’t need to live her life the way she was and that only she could change her life.

The climax of the story was great and I was put on edge. I did get slightly emotional during a certain scene with Shay and Katie.

All of the storylines were resolved by the end of the book. I really liked how they were resolved in realistic ways. Not every storyline was a HEA and it was refreshing to read that.

The end of the book was great. It was pretty standard but the changes in Katie and Shay was there for everyone to see.

How many stars will I give Winter Falls: A Tale of the Snow Queen: 5

Why: This was a book that I really got into and it has to be the most creative retelling of the Snow Queen that I have ever read. The characters are engaging and the storyline was great. I really liked that the story was told, in part, by flashback. It made for an interesting read. The author also did a great job of covering the sensitive subjects of suicide, mental illness, child abuse, and rape.

Will I reread: Yes

Will I recommend to family and friends: Yes

Age range: Older Teen (16+).

Why: This is not a book for a tween or younger teenager. Because of the content (suicide, mental illness, child abuse, rape), I would suggest that older teens (16+) read this book.

Goodreads synopsis:

Secrets threaten, but magic kills.
Plagued by sanity-twisting magic, Sarn must unravel a deadly mystery. But he’s prevented at every turn because his life is not his own. Haunted by one of the victims, Sarn must find out what happened before the ghost drives him mad. As plans collide beneath ensorcelled boughs, one thing is certain. If Sarn can’t get his magic under control, he’ll never discover why enchanted trees committed murder. How far is he willing to go to find the answer? The search might cost more than his sanity. Exposing the truth might claim his life and destroy the secrecy protecting his son from a killer. Something lurks in the enchanted forest and its sights are set on Sarn and the magic in his blood. First, in a new series, Curse Breaker: Enchanted is a fast-paced, character-driven fantasy tale with a murderous twist. Sarn’s story unfolds over three action-packed days in his double life leading to a breathtaking finale.

My review:

Curse Breaker: Enchanted starts off Sarn hurrying through a crowded tunnel in the mountain fortress in which he lived. He was going to be late to his job and was cutting through an area that indentured servants were not allowed access. Indentured meaning slave. In this world, debts didn’t go away when parents died. Their children inherited them and if they couldn’t afford to pay them, then they became indentured servants until the debt is paid off.

Sarn, though, is a different case. To get his brother a chance to get out of the mountain fortress, he indentured himself to a very influential politician for 4 years. The time that it would take his brother to complete his classes and get into a university. The politician greed. In a few months, his brother will be graduating and Sarn will be a free man, he hopes.

See, Sarn is also something else. He is a mage and his magic manifests through his eyes. So they glow a luminous green. He has kept his magic a secret from everyone but his masters’, owner and his family. So, as he is hurrying through the crowd, he is doing so with his eyes shut and using a map that is generated by his magic in his head.

He eventually decides to take a turn and ends up on a balcony….where he senses that someone died in the enchanted forest. His magic wants out but after a struggle, Sarn is able to push it back down. Sarn decides that if he wants to meet with his masters on time, that he needs to jump off the balcony to the balcony below.

There, he is met by Gregori. Gregori is part of the Rangers….who Sarn works for as part of his indentured servant deal. He is blindfolded and brought back to the Ranger stronghold.  Before they get there, they are met by Nolo, one of Sarn’s masters and they make haste to the enchanted forest. Once at the enchanted forest, he passed through the barrier that was erected and was taken by one of the trees that patrolled the forest. He was taken to a murder site….where the ghost of a child attached itself to him. He is upset to find out that the trees allowed the murder of a child inside its woods. He also keeps hearing the phrase eam’meye erator and seeing symbols flash across his eyes. Symbols that he has no idea what they mean.

He is met by Nolo at the murder site and Nolo is shaken to see how much Sarn is affected by seeing a dead child. He thought that it is because of something that happened in Sarn’s past. See, Sarn was found half-frozen in a snow bank with his younger brother 6 years earlier. He was sent to work in the mines, with his brother, and was caught in a cave-in. Only he and his brother were saved…..because of his eyes. Sarn was sent to live in an orphanage, where he was severely abused by the Headmaster. He ran away, with Miren, his brother, time and time again to the Rangers and he was returned 5 times. The last time, though, the Headmaster was caught and a severely injured Sarn was nursed back to health. After the execution of the Headmaster, he indentured himself to the politician and the rest was history. It was Nolo who would send Sarn back and it was Nolo who finally discovered the abuse. Nolo feels extremely guilty over what happened, as do the Rangers who had seen what happened.

So when Sarn starts breaking down in the forest, Nolo starts to go to him. But, as he does that, the Queen of All Trees shows up. She takes a hold of Sarn and starts to read his mind. She is upset because Nolo (who she refers to as the Painted Man) hasn’t healed Sarn and he was still broken on the inside. If he isn’t fixed, his magic will expand and kill him. She refers to Sarn as the Child of Magic. While trying to bind him to her, she finds that he is tied to the mountain. Looking through his memories, she finds out something that surprises her. Sarn has a son. The child of a loophole, who shouldn’t statistically be alive and who will be watched closely as he grew into his magic. Troubled by what she has seen and by two deaths that she must prevent (if Sarn died before his son turned seven, then his son would die with him), she released Sarn and goes on her way.

What will happen to Sarn and his son? Will Sarn come to terms with his past? Will he figure out why the ghost child was killed in the forest and why the trees killed his murderers? Will he gain control of his magic? Will he learn to trust anyone outside of his brother and son?

This is just a taste of what this book has to offer. If you want to learn more….read the book!!!

****************************************

I really, really liked this book but it did take me a long time to get into it. The book starts off very slow and stays slow until about 50% of the book. But after that, the book picked up the pace. Now, I am not saying that I didn’t like that the book was slow in the beginning. Just the opposite, I loved it. The character and world building were phenomenal. The glimpses you got into Sarn’s past, but not by him…by others who were involved, was heartbreaking.

I did like Sarn. He is doing the best to raise his son and his brother by himself. He believes that he couldn’t go to the Rangers for help because they would separate him from his son…..because he thinks that they consider him mentally deficient. He does have a chip on his shoulder but if you were abused and kept running to people who you thought would help and they kept returning you to your abuser…..wouldn’t you have a huge chip too. Plus, he has his best friend, Shade, to deal with. Shade, who once protected him, has turned to drugs and is no longer reliable as a friend. Which pains Sarn to no end.

Of all the Ranger’s, I could not stand Gregori and I was so happy when his wife laid him out. Gregori had tests that he put Sarn through. All consisted of Gregori kidnapping Sarn, dropping him in a remote area and seeing if he came back. When I read that, I was like “WTH”???

I loved the Queen of All Trees. She was such a huge presence in this book and so feared by everyone….including Sarn. But she was creepy too. I mean, she was a huge walking tree that just showed up places and would call to Sarn to try to get him to come out to the enchanted forest. But, she also held a piece to the mystery of the ghost child….so I can see why she was trying to get Sarn to go out there. Still, creeped me out a little.

The end of the book was great and most of the storylines were wrapped up in very satisfying ways. The author did a great job setting up for book 2 and the epilogue….well I am very curious about where that goes.

How many stars will I give Curse Breaker: Enchanted: 4

Why: This is a wonderfully written book. While it starts off slow, it does pick up speed in the middle of the book. The characters are wonderfully fleshed out and the plot is very engaging.

Will I reread: Yes

Will I recommend to family and friends: Yes

Age Range: Young Adult

Why: Violence. No sex or language. Very clean.

Book synopsis:

Winter lasts most of the year at the edge of the Russian wilderness, and in the long nights, Vasilisa and her siblings love to gather by the fire to listen to their nurse’s fairy tales. Above all, Vasya loves the story of Frost, the blue-eyed winter demon. Wise Russians fear him, for he claims unwary souls, and they honor the spirits that protect their homes from evil.

Then Vasya’s widowed father brings home a new wife from Moscow. Fiercely devout, Vasya’s stepmother forbids her family from honoring their household spirits, but Vasya fears what this may bring. And indeed, misfortune begins to stalk the village.

But Vasya’s stepmother only grows harsher, determined to remake the village to her liking and to groom her rebellious stepdaughter for marriage or a convent. As the village’s defenses weaken and evil from the forest creeps nearer, Vasilisa must call upon dangerous gifts she has long concealed—to protect her family from a threat sprung to life from her nurse’s most frightening tales.

My review:

The book starts on a late winter night in northern Rus’ (Russia) in Pytor Vladimirovich’s house. Dunya and the children were gathered around the oven. Dunya was about to tell the children a folktale about the frost-demon, the winter-king Karachun, when their mother, Marina, came in and joined in listening. Pytor was outside, assisting a ewe in giving birth. When he came in, Marina told him her news. She was expecting another child. This child would be like her mother, who was known as a witch-woman and had mysterious powers. She could tame animals, dream the future and summon rain. Pytor was worried about the news. Marina wasn’t a young woman, and he was afraid that she wouldn’t be strong enough for birth.

He was right. Marina died shortly after giving birth to Vasilisa (Vasya), and what she predicted came true. Vasya was a headstrong, willful, and almost feral. She also inherited her grandmother’s powers.

When she was six years old, she got lost in the forest outside her house and came upon an older man sleeping in the roots of a tree. Thinking that she could wake him up and he would know the way to her father’s house, she shook him. Only to find out that he is a hideously disfigured man. One eye was missing, with the socket sewn shut and with hideous scars on that side of her face. Still, she invites him back to her house if he can take her home. Then a genuinely supernatural thing happens, as she goes to take this stranger’s hand, a man on a white horse comes thundering to where they were, makes the older man go back to sleep and frightens Vasya, who ends up being found by Sascha, her beloved older brother.

After that escapade that Pytor decides to head to Moscow and get a wife for himself. He takes Sasha and Kolya with him. While he was there, he meets a mysterious stranger who gives him a beautiful jewel and tells him to hold on to it until Vasya gets older. If he doesn’t, this strange man will come after and kill Kolya.

Pytor does find a wife while in Moscow. His late wife’s half brother’s daughter, who sees demons and is classified as mad by her father, stepmother, and servants. Anna is her name, and she becomes my least favorite person in the book. After discovering that Vasya can talk to the household spirits and non-household spirits, Anna would beat her to get her repent. Not that it did any good. Vasya only became more feral, more headstrong.

When Vasya turns fourteen, a new priest is sent to her village since the old one has died. Anna begs the Metropolitan to send a new one, and they did. A young priest named Konstantin Nikonovich, who is considered somewhat of an upstart, is sent there to straighten him out. Anna is thrilled because he is driving out the demons (aka the household spirits) that she sees. Vasya, not so much, and she resorts to leaving offerings for them where her stepmother can’t see them or in rooms where she doesn’t go.

It is during that time that the mysterious man makes an appearance in Dunya’s dream, and he demands that she give Vasya the necklace. Dunya makes a bargain with him to wait another year to give it to her. In that year, everything that can go wrong does go wrong.

I loved Vasya. She was a spunky girl who called it like it was and wasn’t afraid to stand up to anyone or anything. I did think, at one point, that her spunkiness was going to get her killed, but it didn’t.

The end of the book is a must-read. It was fantastic. The very end of the book, though, is what got me, and it made me smile.

I would give The Bear and The Nightingale an Adult rating. There is no sex. There is no language. There is violence. I would recommend that no one under the age of 21 read this book.

I would reread The Bear and The Nightingale. I would recommend it to family and friends.
